WET personnel started working at a coal fired power plant in Utah in 2003 with a facility wide ground water and surface water investigation. A monitoring system was installed to document any impacts to ground water or surface water from all operations at the facility. Each potential source area has monitoring wells installed upgradient and downgradient to characterize ground water flow and water quality.
As a result of this investigation, operational changes were implemented to reduce the liquid content of the coal combustion residues and a remediation system was installed to collect all seepage from the landfill. A water rights analysis was completed to verify that the remediation system would not adversely affect any area water rights. On-going monitoring and maintenance continue at the facility, including data management, permit compliance and agency reporting.
