First-Time Certification Course
This two-day course is for students who have never been certified as a SWPPP preparer and administrator or for those who let their certification lapse. A certification is valid for three years (plus a six-month grace period) from the date of issuance (date listed on your certificate).
In this course, you will cover the following topics:
- Part I—Montana’s Regulatory Background, Why Stormwater Matters, Erosion Processes, Pollutants of Concern (POCs)
- Part II—All about Best Management Practices (BMPs): Categories, Specifications, Maintenance, Temporary vs. Permanent, Spill Prevention
- Part III—SWPPP Preparer and Administrator Responsibilities, NOI, SWPPP, NCR, NOT, PTN, REW, FACTS
- Part IV—Online Resources, Sage Grouse, MTNHP, CWAIC, Web Soil Survey
- Part V—Practical Applications: Examples, BMP Case Studies, BMP Phasing
⚠️Prerequisite: a working knowledge of BMPs to manage construction site stormwater.

Recertification Course
This one-day course is intended for students who already hold a SWPPP preparer and administrator certification and need to renew certification. Certifications are valid for three years (plus a six-month grace period).
